Fingal Wildlife Management Area

Located on 724 acres of Crown land, Fingal Wildlife Management Area (FWMA) is a remarkable blend of natural habitats and land management practices. Originally a World War II air force training base, FWMA has undergone extensive habitat restoration, including the removal of military infrastructure, the development of ponds, and the planting of trees, shrubs, and hedgerows. It is co-managed through a partnership between the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Elgin Stewardship Council.

The area features three main hiking trails: War-of-Roses, Tallgrass Prairie, and South Woodlot. The Tallgrass Prairie trail includes a viewing station overlooking Carmichael Pond, where visitors can observe waterfowl and enjoy a peaceful spot to relax. The War-of-Roses Trail, a 1.5 km route, follows the historic Air Force road system, combining nature and history.

With over 200 species of wildlife identified during breeding and migration seasons, FWMA is a haven for nature enthusiasts. Visitors can enjoy wildlife-related activities such as hiking, wildlife watching, environmental education, and hunting in the fall at controlled access points. Approximately 395 acres are under active farming, demonstrating how agriculture and wildlife can coexist.
